The Sonata for Clarinet and Piano is a youthful work that has no particular “program” attached to the music. Abstract in nature, the work largely revolves around an exploration of polytonality and free chromaticism, however there is also a conscious effort to use several motives consistently throughout the work. The third movement (played without pause from the second) contains, perhaps, the most strikingly different pitch material. During the time this piece was written, I was performing a lot of the band works of Percy Grainger. As such, I was influenced by the music and an English folk-like melody is prominently featured throughout the movement.
